Cruise America is excited to become a Gold Sponsor of the Green Beret Foundation bicycle racing team as they participate in the prestigious 2013 Race Across America (RAAM) event. The nation’s leader in RV rentals has agreed to donate the use of one of their top-of-the-line class C motorhomes to use all throughout the competition. Having a recreational vehicle on the journey will facilitate sleeping and resting for the team while they are not peddling. It will be a rolling headquarters for them as they make their way across the nation.
The race will begin on June 11-16, depending on whether the riders are solo competitors or relay teams. The departure point is in Oceanside, California. Each of the riders must be in tip-top physical condition, as endurance is a key for even finishing the course, let alone winning the race. The designated route spans 3000 miles of countryside, crossing 12 states. There is 170,000 feet of uphill riding on the trek, and the racers have only nine days to complete the course. The competition ends in Annapolis, Maryland on June 20-24. This means that each team must ride 250-350 miles per day. The Team GBF cyclists are David Viens, Gino Elsea, Dave Johnson and Andrew Schaaf and Crew Chief John Roberts, all having served in the military. The team coach is Susan Hefler. More information about the team can be found on their website www.teamgbf.com.
The idea of becoming a Gold Sponsor to the Race Across America team appeals to Cruise America, as the competitors are riding for such a worthy cause. The four-member cycling team is made up of former military members who have committed their efforts to raising funds for the Green Beret Foundation (GBF). This foundation is a non-profit organization that helps wounded or ill Army Special Forces warriors and their families with things such as assistance with caretaking, financial assistance and educational scholarships.
The Green Beret Foundation is able to provide the services to these deserving recipients because the organization is led and staffed by Green Berets and their families. This is a core structure that they have committed to maintaining in order to best serve the needs of their fellow warriors. Many of the staff members have been wounded themselves, or are spouses of a wounded Green Beret. The services they provide are all geared to helping the recipient become self-reliant, in a manner that will help them overcome their obstacles and return to a life of giving and contributing.
The RV will make a great headquarters for the GBF racing team, but would also make for comfortable and convenient accommodations for anyone traveling to this monumental race, either as a spectator or a participant. There are models available to fit any family or traveling party.
