Our vacation started with a flight from Atlanta, Ga to Las Vegas. Picked up the RV in Vegas & overnighted at Sam's Town right down the road from Cruise America. Next morning it's out Rt 15 on the way to Zion National Park.
Camped right by the Virgin River at Watchman Campground. Took the morning tour with the Park Ranger then came back & hiked the river walk. There's also a great evening program talk with the ranger at the campground ampitheater each night. The Zion tour buses take you right into town for a bit of shopping & ice cream.
Next stop - Bryce Canyon. Stayed in North Campground. Man am I glad we didn't take that narrow winding road between the parks on day one! Great scenery but a bit scarry driving a much bigger vehicle (30') than our usual Taurus. Happy to say the RV survived unscathed. Bryce is amazing - I think I filled an entire 1 G sd card with photos. If, like me, you're unable to hike very far - the park offers a FREE bus tour that takes you way into the park & then stops at all the overlooks on the way back. Sign up at the visitor center - they'll even come pick you up at the campground & drop you back off there when it's over.
Next Stop - the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Camping just a short distance from the rim. Up at 6:30 am - got some great pix of the sunrise. Dinner at the Lodge & a short hike down the trail. Just as we were packing up to leave one of those showy white squirrels consented to pose perfectly about 8 ft up the tree in front of our RV.
Next stop - Page AZ - 4 Hour smooth water rafting trip down the Colorado River. Wasn't so sure about this one when I booked it - but it turned out to be one of the highlights of the vacation. Blue Heron, Big Horn Sheep & Indian Petroglyphs along with yet more spectacular scenery. Bring sunscreen, a hat & plenty of water ... it gets really hot out on that water.
Last Stop - Los Vegas - Sam's Town again ... Sam's Town shuttle bus to the main drag ... & a monorail pass to get around town. Watched them shoot a commercial for one of the Wynn Hotels. Helecopter hanging inches from the building as I assume Steve Wynn was on the building's roof making his pitch.
My son had just returned from Vegas & raved about the lion habitat at MGM so we had to stop there. Think we hit there at nap time. Ended up across the street at the Titanic Exhibit. Managed to lose the requisite amount of money in the casinos & then retired back to the campground for a relaxing dip in the pool.
This vacation was planned with the help of the AAA web site who suggested the Zion, Bryce, North Rim circle tour. With the possible exception of that time they rescued me on I-75, I think this trip idea was the best thing I've gotten out of my AAA membership. I'm amazed that so many of the folks I met on my vacation & who are members here are from outside the USA. It's a real shame that more of us who live in this country don't take the time to go see some of it's magnificent national parks & natural wonders.
Bring your cameras - it's well worth the trip!
