Custer State Park 2008

We’re all the way from Holland. This year, we travelled through the Black Hills with our Cruise America rental RV. It was the time of the annual Sturgis motorcycle event, and the Black Hills were crowded by thousands of rough-looking but friendly bikers. I tell you, those guys were everywhere…

After enjoying beautiful places in the Black Hills we decided to visit Custer State Park. At the entrance the sign warned us for narrow tunnels, but the ranger at the entrance said that going through with our 25-footer would not be a significant problem. The guy looked trustworthy, so we decided to go on…

After 10 minutes we approached the tunnel. My wife got out, in doubt whether we could make it. Well, she helped us through giving instructions. The tunnel was high enough, I can tell you, but we had – seriously! – 3 inches left on both sides passing through. The tunnel was about 100ft long, but it took me about 15 minutes to get the RV through, undamaged…My wife took this picture, and it looks like we were helped by a ‘higher power’to get the vehicle through undamaged!

All the time, traffic behind us piled up, waiting patiently, awing at that crazy Dutch guy trying to get his RV at the other side of the tunnel. People got out of their cars, taking pictures.

Finally we got through, and we put the RV at the side of the road to have a smoke. First to get through after us was a group of bikers with their thumbs up, cheering that I was their hero for the day and applauding. The final guy of the group looked at us and said, smiling:”No wonder you’re smoking”. Well, I can tell you, I had smoother rides with our RV, but this was one to remember!
